Leconfield House at this time of night appeared still, just like the streets. Only the odd twinkling of light from the windows betrayed any sign of activity to the outsider. Pulling up gently, the car seemed to roll to a halt as the brakes squealed ever so slightly directly outside the front entrance,

‘Come on Peter.’ Collins said as he opened the door, encouraging Dobbins to follow with a measure of apprehension. With both men now out of the warmth of the car into the outside air, quickly they proceeded to cross the threshold of the doorway into the main entrance of the imposing building. At the reception they stopped in front of a security guard there. Collins signed in, putting a pen to a small piece of paper, before handing a similar piece to Dobbins along with the pen,

‘Sign in.’ he said,

‘Never used to sign in before.’

‘New procedures.’ Collins replied as his guest scribbled his name, the slight scratching noise as the nib moved across the document as he did so.

Dobbins did not entirely trust Collins; the two were only very lightly acquainted through business and he was sure that the feeling was mutual from the other side.

As he was lead down the spacious corridors of Leconfield, Dobbins said nothing as he carried his case with him, praying it was unsuspected and hoping that they were completely unaware of the illegality of the contents as they climbed up the flight of stairs. Footsteps echoing throughout with each stride, along with those who were already working this late hour created a harmonious tune that rang through the different floors, that was until they reached the top where a soft green carpet muffled the sounds to a heavy thud,

‘In here.’ Collins said as he showed Dobbins to a white carved door, knocking on it to signal their arrival,

‘Come in.’ A voice replied from within. They opened the door and entered with Dobbins wondering just what was about to happen on the other side.

The room and the situation he found himself in was a rather unnerving one; a dimly lit but well decorated space, the mid-green wallpaper contrasting well with the white of the door, frames and ceiling. Nothing around was unostentatious. Only a small lamp hanging from above provided the insufficient illumination giving rise to the psychological effects of apprehension. For Dobbins, who by now had been seated in a wooden chair facing Collins and Hunt, the man waiting for him in their own more comfortable seats, it felt more like an interrogation,

‘Do you know why you’re here?’ Hunt asked. His face and grey three-piece suit only partially lit from the angle of the light,

‘No.’ Dobbins replied,

‘Then allow me to enlighten you. What do you know about ‘Pepper’?’

Dobbins paused before answering, ‘Pepper was the codename of one of my assets when I was a case officer.’

‘Yes, an agent called Terry Chapman correct?’

‘That’s correct.’

‘Apparently you sent him to East Berlin to monitor a man called Vasily Bolgorov?’

Sitting there and getting rather uncomfortable, there was no way he was going to reveal what Chapman had uncovered while over there, ‘Yes.
